Contractor killed in accident on EKU campus
RICHMOND, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A contractor has died after a workplace accident Tuesday at Eastern Kentucky University.
According to the Madison County Coroner’s Office, the victim has been identified as 61-year-old Edwin Burton II of Illinois. The coroner says Burton was working on an air conditioning unit in the basement of Telford Hall when it fell on him.
In a statement, EKU confirmed that a contractor performing work on its Richmond campus was involved in a fatal incident. The university said, “Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, friends and colleagues. Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation into the cause of death, we will not have additional comment.”
University officials say OSHA has been notified and is investigating the incident. EKU also emphasized that Burton was a contractor, not an employee of the school.
