Prestonsburg High placed on brief lockdown after reported threat

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Prestonsburg High School was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday after a student allegedly made threats about having a gun on campus.

According to police, a school resource officer was alerted that a male student claimed to have a firearm in his backpack. Within minutes, Prestonsburg Police, Floyd County deputies, Kentucky State Police, and local fire and EMS responded to secure the building.

No weapon was found, but investigators say the student was taken into custody and charged with second-degree terroristic threatening. He is being held at the Breathitt County Juvenile Detention Center.

School officials emphasized that student safety remains their top priority.
