Labor Day travel: Lower costs, busy roads expected across Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Millions of Americans are hitting the road and skies this Labor Day weekend, marking the unofficial end of summer.

AAA says travelers can expect lower costs this year, with gas prices, flights, hotel stays, and car rentals all down compared to 2024. In Kentucky, gas is averaging $2.92 a gallon, about 14 cents less than a year ago.

Nationwide, most holiday travelers are choosing to drive. AAA reports nearly 90 percent of Kentuckians head to their destinations by car. Transportation data company INRIX recommends traveling earlier in the day to avoid the heaviest congestion, which is expected in the afternoons and evenings.

Here in Lexington, Blue Grass Airport’s website shows all departing and arriving flights were on time as of Monday morning, including routes with American, Delta, and United to hubs such as Charlotte, Atlanta, and Chicago.
