Kentucky Fish and Wildlife at work on environmental project

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) A major environmental project is underway in Scott County.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife has started removing a low-head dam at Great Crossing Park on the North Fork of Elkhorn Creek.

Officials say the dam—stretching 200 feet across the creek—has been linked to multiple drownings, including incidents in 2021 and 2022. Removing it is expected to improve public safety, restore natural water flow, and boost fish populations like smallmouth bass and rock bass.

The project, scheduled for completion by August 29, will also enhance water quality and habitat for native mussels and other aquatic life.
