Former Letcher County sheriff due in court in judge’s murder case
LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines is scheduled to appear in court Friday for a status hearing in his ongoing murder case.
Stines is charged with murder in the September shooting death of District Court Judge Kevin Mullins. Prosecutors say video allegedly shows Stines firing shots inside Judge Mullins’ chambers at the Letcher County Courthouse.
Court records indicate Stines’ defense attorneys have filed a motion to dismiss the murder indictment, claiming prosecutors held an “off-the-record” meeting with grand jurors and failed to turn over key records.
The hearing is set for 1 p.m. Friday.
