New species of ancient shark discovered in Mammoth Cave
MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Scientists have uncovered a new species of ancient shark deep beneath Mammoth Cave National Park, the University of Kentucky’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences announced.
Dubbed Macadens olsoni, the fossilized shark lived more than 335 million years ago, during a period when the region was submerged under a shallow sea. Measuring less than a foot long, the shark’s curved teeth were well suited for crushing mollusks and marine worms.
This discovery adds to more than 40 shark species identified in the park over the past 10 months and provides fresh insight into early vertebrate evolution and ancient marine ecosystems. Researchers say the find underscores Mammoth Cave’s value not only as a geological wonder but also as a treasure trove of paleontological history that warrants continued protection.
