New details revealed in preliminary hearing for Lexington murder suspect Nathaniel Danzy
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — New testimony during a preliminary hearing Tuesday shed more light on what led to the arrest of 28-year-old Nathaniel Danzy, who is charged with murder in the May shooting death of 25-year-old Zemondric Hall.
Lexington Police Detective Jody Kizis testified that on May 28, officers responded to the Bridle Creek Apartments on Nicholasville Road after a shots-fired call. Kizis said a property employee directed officers to a vehicle where Hall was found with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Kizis, witnesses reported seeing a man running from the scene and a black Nissan speeding away. One witness told police they saw the man shooting at the vehicle Hall was in. Investigators later determined that Hall and Danzy were roommates at the apartment.
Danzy became a person of interest after cell phone records placed him at the scene at the time of the shooting, Kizis said. He also testified that Danzy allegedly confessed to shooting Hall, and the details of that confession aligned with other evidence gathered during the investigation.
Detectives recovered 23 shell casings near Hall’s vehicle, which was riddled with bullets. Kizis testified that officers found two guns inside Hall’s vehicle, but neither had a round in the chamber and no casings were found inside — suggesting Hall did not fire a weapon.
When asked about the possibility of self-defense, Kizis said investigators found no evidence to support that claim and no indication that an argument took place beforehand.
The judge ruled there was enough evidence to send the case to a grand jury. Danzy remains held in the Fayette County Detention Center on a $750,000 bond.
