Former wildcat Gabriel Diallo pushes world No. 5 Taylor Fritz to five sets at Wimbledon
WIMBLEDON, UK. (ABC 36 SPORTS) – After earning his first career win at Wimbledon on Monday, former Kentucky All-American (2020-2022) Gabriel Diallo returned to the grass courts on Wednesday for a second-round showdown with Taylor Fritz, the top-ranked American and current World No. 5.
Diallo came out strong, taking the first set 6-3. Fritz responded by claiming the next two sets, but Diallo dug deep in the fourth to force a deciding fifth set.
However, in the final frame, Fritz closed out the match 6-3 in the fifth.
Despite the loss, it was a breakthrough showing for Diallo. The 22-year-old Canadian pushed one of the tournament’s top contenders to the limit in just his second Wimbledon appearance.
