High Street project to improve pedestrian safety

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A new pilot project is underway along East High Street in Lexington, aimed at improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Running through June 6, the project temporarily redesigns the stretch between Woodland Avenue and Rose Street. The city says the goal is to reduce speeding and make the area safer to cross.

The changes include:

  • Reducing traffic to one lane

  • Adding a protected bike lane

  • Creating 36 new parking spots

City officials say the area has long been considered unsafe due to speeding and challenging crossings. Traffic, speed, and usage data will be collected throughout the pilot to help determine whether permanent changes will be made by 2026.
