D.E.A. Drug Take Back Day garners nearly 10,000 pounds

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Kentuckians stepped up in a big way during the DEA’s latest National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, turning in nearly 10,000 pounds of unused or expired medications.

The effort is part of a national push to safely dispose of unneeded prescription drugs and prevent them from falling into the wrong hands. Across the country, more than 620,000 pounds were collected.

The DEA says this program has now removed more than 17 million pounds of medications since it launched in 2010. Another Take Back Day is scheduled for October.
