Coroner releases name of man killed in hit-and-run DUI case

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — A pedestrian who was hit by a car earlier this month on Georgetown Road has died, and the case against the woman accused in the hit-and-run—an elementary school teacher—has now been sent to a grand jury.

According to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, 32-year-old Joshua Hampton of Lily, Kentucky, died on April 18, two days after he was struck. His cause of death was listed as complications of multiple blunt force injuries, and his death has been ruled an accident. Hampton was hit in the 1000 block of Georgetown Road near Mercer Road, around 6:50 a.m. on April 16.

Lexington Police arrested 29-year-old Jaime Caldwell following the crash. Investigators say she admitted to drinking and taking prescription medication before driving and that her blood alcohol level was nearly three and a half times the legal limit. She was charged with DUI (Aggravated) and Leaving the Scene of an Accident/Failure to Render Aid/Assist with Death or Serious Physical Injury.

Police say they were able to identify her using the department’s Real-Time Intelligence Center. Caldwell was booked into the Fayette County Detention Center and later released on a $25,000 bond.

Caldwell, a Fayette County Public Schools employee, has been placed on administrative leave. The district released a statement confirming the leave but declined to comment further due to the ongoing investigation and personnel confidentiality.

Caldwell earlier pleaded not guilty.
