LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- For the first time in the United Soccer League Championship, Lexington Sporting Club and Louisville City FC will face off in a regular season matchup with a trophy on the line.

The Commonwealth Cup is the hardware up for grabs on Thursday May 1 at 8 p.m. on the pitch of Lynn Family Stadium in Derby City. The return fixture is set for Saturday, July 26 at Lexington SC Stadium.

Twice in preseason play and once in a the U.S. Open Cup knockout match have been the only meetings of the clubs before.

The latter is the only time an official match has been played with Lexington losing 1-0 in 2023 and bowing out of the tournament away from home. At that time, Lexington was a member of the USL League One.

This past offseason, the Greens made the jump to the USL Championship. LouCity is in it’s 11th year as a Championship club and are the defending winners of the Player’s Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular season record.

“Moving up the USL Championship league is a milestone moment for Lexington SC and the introduction of the Commonwealth Cup shows how far the game has come in Kentucky,” said Lexington SC CEO Kim Shelton. “Together with LouCity and Republic Bank, we’re shaping a future that puts Kentucky soccer on the national stage.”

If the teams split the results, the Commonwealth Cup will go to the club with the highest goal differential before other traditional two-legged soccer tiebreakers determine a winner.
