Investigation continues into Richmond daycare owners charged in child abuse case

RICHMOND, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The investigation into two Richmond daycare centers continues as the owners and another individual face multiple charges tied to a growing child abuse case.

According to police, Jessica Houk and Theodrick Hersey, owners of A Step Ahead Daycare and The Kids Club childcare center, were arrested Friday along with Brooklyn Houk. All three are charged with child abuse, failure to report abuse, and obstructing an investigation.

The three were initially scheduled to appear in court Monday, but court records show their hearings have now been rescheduled for May.

Their arrests follow charges filed earlier this month against another daycare employee, who is accused of physically abusing children and depriving at least one child of food. Police say at least five children have been identified as victims so far.

According to arrest citations, the reported abuse includes a child allegedly being strangled, and another reportedly punched by a staff member. Police also say the owners are accused of instructing employees to lie to state investigators about a separate incident in which a child had escaped from the building.

According to Fayette County Public Schools, Theodrick Hersey is an employee of the school district. FCPS sent us the following statement concerning his arrest: ’Fayette County Public Schools is aware of the situation involving Theo Hersey. Due to the ongoing investigation and the confidential nature of personnel matters, we are limited in what we can share at this time. However, we can confirm that the employee has been placed on administrative leave. As always, our students’ and staff’s safety and well-being remain our highest priority.’ Dia Davidson-Smith, FCPS District Spokesperson

The investigation remains ongoing.
