Lexington to host expungement clinic and job fair
Event aims to help residents clear records and find new employment opportunities
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – April is Second Chance Month, and Lexington officials are marking the occasion with an event designed to give residents a fresh start.
A city expungement clinic and job fair will be held Thursday, April 24 at the Central Bank Center.
“I’ve seen potential reawakened and dreams unlocked,” said Tiffany Brown, Chief Opportunity Officer for the City of Lexington.
The event will offer support for residents looking to clear their records and gain employment, something city leaders say has already changed hundreds of lives.
“Seeing how this helps their career and their success and their families in our community, change for the better has always been something that is even inspiring for me to witness,” Brown said.
This is the sixth clinic and fair organized by the city. More than 1,800 people have been impacted through the program so far, according to organizers. Mayor Linda Gorton shared just one example of that impact.
“A couple years ago a gentleman came up to me, he said, ‘I have four children I have not been able to find a job and now my record is expunged,’ and he was going out for job interviews. This is powerful stuff,” Gorton said.
Officials say registration and a background check are required for those wishing to participate. Walk-ins are welcome, but registering in advance is encouraged.
