Four without a home after early morning fire

Officials say the fire may have started in the kitchen

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – A woman and three children are without a home after an early morning fire Tuesday. Officials say the fire may have started in the kitchen.

Multiple crews with the Lexington Fire Department responded to Erie Road, where the fire broke out. Officials say once first responders arrived, the incident was upgraded to a working structure fire.

“Our crews were dispatched at 4:43 this morning [Tuesday] for a reported structure fire, upon arrival we found a family out in the back reporting a fire in the kitchen, crews went in made an attack and put the fire out,” said Robert Forehand, District Chief with the Lexington Fire Department.

The Lexington Fire Department says the woman and three children escaped safely. The woman was treated on the scene, but no other injuries were reported. While officials say the fire was inside the home, crews also made their way to the roof to create ventilation.

“We utilize the gable vents as natural ventilation we open those up to facilitate some of the smoke removal for the crews inside while they were doing their fire attack,” Forehand said.

The Red Cross was also on the scene assisting the displaced family as they look for a new place to stay.

“We’ve notified the Red Cross to help them they’ll be displaced temporarily until they can have repairs made to the kitchen,” Forehand added.

Firefighters are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
