Publix set to open first Lexington store Wednesday

A look inside the new store ahead of opening day

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — For the first time, a popular grocery store is preparing to open its doors in Lexington.

In two days, this will be the first Publix to open in the Lexington area and the second in the state. The Louisville store opened just last year.

“If we pop up in a place, it’s usually because there’s been requests to come there,” said Nicole Krauss, Media Relations Manager for Publix.

The new grocery store is located at the Citation Point Shopping Center along Georgetown Road. It includes a sub shop and to-go food, a pharmacy, and a liquor store.

“We’re just excited I mean you got your Pub Subs you got all the Publix culture, and to be able to embrace the community the way that we have, long before we actually open the doors is really special to us,” Krauss said.

The shelves are fully stocked, but no shoppers have walked the aisles yet. However, one local organization says the store is already making a difference.

“I think it will help us do the work that we need to do to make sure there is enough food for 265,000 people across Central and Eastern Kentucky so that they can thrive,” said Michael Halligan, CEO of God’s Pantry Food Bank.

God’s Pantry Food Bank says Publix has already supported their organization with monetary and food donations, as well as volunteering.

“They have donated nearly 200,000 pounds of fresh produce, they have volunteered at our volunteer center over a Winchester road. They have asked us to make an additional solicitation for more financial support, all of that before the store even opened,” Halligan said.

Several local leaders attended a tour of the store Monday. The Publix grand opening is set for Wednesday at 7 a.m.
