Former UK student Sophia Rosing seeks early release through shock probation

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The attorney representing former University of Kentucky student Sophia Rosing has filed a motion requesting early release from her sentence. Rosing, who pleaded guilty to multiple assault charges after attacking a Black student worker and using racial slurs in a viral 2022 video, was sentenced to 12 months in prison in October 2024.

Attorney Daniel Whitley confirmed they have filed for shock probation, which would allow Rosing to be released after serving 30 to 180 days of her sentence. If approved, she would complete the remainder of her sentence on probation.

Rosing’s case gained national attention after the November 2022 incident, where she was recorded repeatedly using racial slurs and physically assaulting a student worker in a UK dormitory. She later pleaded guilty to four counts of assault, along with charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

A judge has yet to schedule a hearing on the shock probation request. ABC 36 NEWS NOW will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available.
