Martin County residents evacuated after flooding

MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Nearly 300 people were evacuated by the Kentucky Air National Guard after historic flooding trapped residents in two housing complexes in Martin County, state officials said Monday.

According to Kentucky State Police and the National Guard, residents were airlifted to safety on Black Hawk helicopters and transported to Big Sandy Regional Airport in Debord.

State police also played a key role in the evacuations, transporting 44 people and seven dogs to the airport before they were moved to emergency shelters.

The weekend flooding, which devastated multiple counties in eastern Kentucky, has prompted an ongoing statewide emergency response with search and rescue teams still working in affected areas. Officials say cleanup and recovery efforts will continue throughout the week.
