Tri-County Animal Shelter needs help after hoarding case
ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — An animal shelter in Rowan County is begging for adoptions after taking in several cats and dogs from a hoarding case.
The Tri-County Animal Shelter says it’s way over capacity. Some kennels are holding 4 to 5 dogs in them.
Shelter assistant Joshua Brown says they took in 25 dogs and 16 cats from a hoarding situation in Carter County. He says the shelter is holding 72 dogs when it’s equipped to hold 50, and 50 cats when it’s only supposed to hold 30.
“It’s really hard to give all of the animals, having as many as we do, the adequate care that they need,” Jessica Conn, an employee at the shelter, told us. “It’s stressful on us but it’s even more stressful on the animals because whenever you get so many animals in one space it’s overwhelming for them.”
The animal shelter has had to stop taking in owner surrenders. And with the increase in animals, supplies are running low.
Making a difficult situation even worse, the animals from the hoarding case can’t leave until the court proceedings are done. Employees at the shelter say there’s no telling how long that could be.
They’re really hoping for adoptions of the animals they can release to make room for the rest.
