Madison County murder suspect in court

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A 75-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a man in Berea before fleeing to another county is in court today on murder charges.

According to Berea police, Steven Gerlaugh was arrested early Tuesday morning in Garrard County during a traffic stop, following a multi-county search. Officers say Gerlaugh is accused of shooting 42-year-old Thomas Rison in the chest Monday night on Baldwin Street.

The Madison County coroner confirmed Rison died shortly after the shooting at a local hospital.

According to the arrest warrant, surveillance video from the scene allegedly shows Gerlaugh sitting in his car and speaking with Rison, who was standing next to the driver’s side window. Investigators say the video then shows what appears to be a muzzle flash, followed by Rison collapsing to the ground as Gerlaugh drives away.
