Lexington mayor declares ‘Blue-White Weekend’ to celebrate basketball tradition

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Mayor Linda Gorton has officially declared January 31 – February 1, 2025, as Blue-White Weekend in Lexington, encouraging fans to wear blue and white to celebrate the city’s deep-rooted basketball tradition.

The declaration, part of Basketball Week, honors Lexington’s role in high school and college basketball history, as well as the players and coaches who have contributed to the sport’s legacy in the Commonwealth. This year’s celebration coincides with Lexington’s 250th anniversary, further emphasizing the city’s sports heritage.

Basketball Week will conclude on Saturday, February 1, when the University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball Team faces the Arkansas Razorbacks at Rupp Arena.

“We wish the Wildcats the best of luck this weekend,” Mayor Gorton stated in the proclamation.

Fans are encouraged to show their spirit by wearing blue and white in support of Kentucky basketball as the city rallies behind its team for this special occasion.
