Lexington, Fayette County school leaders discuss storm response improvements
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – City and school leaders in Lexington are working to improve communication and operations during hazardous weather events, according to a release sent to news organizations.
Mayor Linda Gorton and Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins held an after-action meeting Thursday to review the response to January’s winter storms and identify areas for improvement, according to the release.
“We want to continue to work together to improve the way we respond to all kinds of hazardous weather events and other types of community emergencies,” Gorton said.
In the release, Liggins echoed the commitment to strengthening preparedness, stating that clear communication and protocols are essential to keeping students, staff, and families safe.
As part of the changes, school representatives will now be included in key city meetings and news conferences about weather emergencies, and government officials will attend school meetings, the release stated.
Technology will also play a role in streamlining response efforts. “We now have a plan to make sure government and school technology work effectively together so we can respond quickly and efficiently,” Gorton said.
The group says it will continue to review snow priority routes and parking restrictions during weather-related emergencies.
