Walking on the Road Less Traveled
One EKU football player's journey to success
RICHMOND, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Eastern Kentucky football player Brad Gurley’s 275 pound frame carries a lineman’s load of strength.
But, his strongest muscle is his perseverance.
The former Bowling Green Purple made a choice years ago to never stop fighting for his dream; being on scholarship to play the game he loves.
“I knew the risk. I knew how hard it would be mentally, physically and emotionally for me and my family,” said Gurley, who passed on a scholarship opportunity at one school to walk-on at EKU.
When he arrived in Richmond, the journey to a full ride was long. Gurley’s tenacity kept him motivated.
“I had a chance here and I envisioned I could play here. This is what I was built for,” said Gurley. “It’s about chasing the playing time to get on the bus.”
Before the 2023 season, Gurley was poised to play. One day before fall camp, everything changed.
“I got into a car accident and that messed everything up for me. All I could think about was my mom and dad.” said Gurley, who sustained a concussion that derailed his plans.
He leaned on his teammates, coaches and family members who fought with him to keep his head in the game.
“Even when I didn’t want to play this game anymore they stuck with me,” said Gurley. “Just seeing them warmed my heart everyday because they were there through my lowest point here.”
His fellow Colonels pushed him forward to a moment that he’ll never forget.
During a preseason meeting, Head Coach Walt Wells announced a special guest would be giving the Colonels a pep talk. The speakers name was Crystal Smith, Brad’s mother.
“I was sitting there in shock. That’s my mom,” said Gurley. The first words out of her mouth changed everything.
“You have a full athletic scholarship!”
Hugs, cheers and joy ensued.
“My teammates rushed me. That’s what it’s all about,” said Gurley.
Brad was one of several student athletes who were featured on national television for a story about walk-ons receiving scholarships.
The defensive lineman not only got his full-ride, but also played in almost every game for the Colonels this past season.
“I’m living my dream and I’m doing what I love. That’s the bow on top of all of it.”
