Kentucky comes back from 16-point halftime deficit to beat #7 Gonzaga
SEATTLE, WA. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Talk about halftime adjustments. #4 Kentucky trailed #7 Gonzaga 50-34 after the first half, and muscled their way back to win it 90-89 in overtime.
The cats struggled in the first half without leading point guard Lamont Butler, who was sidelined with an ankle injury. Kentucky shot just 33% from the field and 29% from the three in the first period, and Gonzaga was dominating the Kentucky defense in the paint; shooting 54%.
In the second half, the cats switched to a zone defense, which helped limit Gonzaga’s pick and roll success. Offensively, the cats went on some runs of their own. Five players finished in double figures, but Andrew Carr and Jaxson Robinson were standout players down the stretch. Carr finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. Robinson totaled 18 points and five assists.
Mark Pope joins Adolph Rupp as the only Kentucky coaches to win their first two games against AP Top-10 opponents.
