Preventing your packages from being stolen

Lexington Police share advice on how to avoid package theft as online orders rise

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — With the rise of online shopping during the holiday season and events like Cyber Monday, Lexington residents are being warned about a possible increase in “porch pirates”—thieves who swipe packages from doorsteps.

“It’s a crime opportunity, someone sees that package and they seize it,” said Sgt. Guy Miller, Supervisor of the Public Information Office at the Lexington Police Department.

The Lexington Police Department is offering advice on how to protect your packages.

“Secure your package before someone else can, and that might be, one having to sign for that package so you actually know you have to be there when that package gets there. Communicate with your neighbors or anybody else that might be in your household, secure that package bring it inside before someone else may secure it.”

Police also recommend leaving delivery instructions for safer drop-off locations, installing a doorbell camera, and registering it with ConnectLex.org to help authorities track suspicious activity.

“If your package is stolen, or you see something suspicious, officers recommend reporting all possible information,” said Sgt. Miller.

“It’s a lot of times people think we have the information and we don’t, and that’s when we’re asking the community. Even if you don’t think it’s that big, that smallest piece of information could make the puzzle for that detective and solve the crime,” said Sgt. Miller.

Police say sharing security camera footage or other details is easy, and residents can also submit tips anonymously to Bluegrass Crime Stoppers.
