Meet Fayette County’s district 12 candidates
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Several Lexington neighborhoods sit in district twelve including Athens Boonesboro, Briar Hill and Richmond Road. The people living in those neighborhoods will have to choose between Chad Walker or Hilary Boone as their representative on city council.
“This was just a natural progression; I already got my feet wet with understanding how the local government works and how to navigate and really want to help out the twelfth district,” Walker said.
“I’m young, I haven’t been in public office before, I’d like to think I’m going to bring new perspective, new ideas into the role,” Boone said.
Both candidates have several issues they want to work to fix, one of them being how to handle short-term rentals in the district.
“I think short-term rentals in the twelfth district is a way to kind of bring tourism kind of to the farms, but also not diluting the communities as far as having too many short-term rentals in a certain area,” Boone said.
“I think the density ought to be the same across the board and that would easily mandate or regulate it a lot better,” Walker said. “I think neighborhoods would be happier about that, and it’d also peel off some of the pressure of affordable housing. There’s a lot of inventory being lost to short-term rentals.”
On the topic of education in Fayette County:
“There seems to be a little bit of a disconnect between the school board and the council, and I think that can get you in to trouble, they really ought to work more hand-in-hand,” Walker said.
“The school board and the council should have an open dialogue and should communicate on a regular basis with one another,” Boone said.
Both Walker and Boone are passionate about preserving farmland as well while utilizing Lexington’s resources as best we can.
