McConnell now longest-serving GOP leader in Senate
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVQ) – On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky became the longest-serving Republican leader in Senate history.
McConnell surpasses former Senator Bob Dole of Kansas, who served in office from 1985 to 1996.
McConnell took office in 1985 and, for most of his tenure, served as minority leader, until Republicans won control of the Senate in the 2014 midterm elections.
McConnell then became Senate majority leader, a position he currently holds.
He is also Kentucky’s longest-serving senator.
The 76-year-old says he plans to run for reelection in 2020.
