Lexington business evacuated for reported chemical leak

UPDATE: (6/11/18, 10:20 a.m.) — The Lexington Fire Department is trying to determine what caused the chemical leak at 3M-Ceradyne on Laco Drive Monday morning.

The chemical leaked is believed to be anhydrous ammonia.

A manager at the plant says employees showed up for work around 6:30 a.m. and heard an alarm going off. They left the building and called the fire department.

He says employees were sent home and the business will remain closed for the rest of the day.

A battalion chief with the Lexington Fire Department tells ABC 36 the scene is safe and there is no danger to the area.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene to make sure the leak is isolated and determine a possible cause.

UPDATE: (6/11/18, 8:33 a.m.) — The Lexington Fire Department confirms there was an ammonia leak at the business and it is contained.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Firefighters are on the scene of a possible chemical leak at a business.

The Lexington Fire Department says firefighters responded to the business on Laco Drive off Old Frankfort Pike at around 6 a.m. Monday.

The building has been evacuated and Laco Drive is shut down.
