Lexington reports spike in suspected nonfatal drug overdoses
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department has issued an overdose alert for the Lexington area, reporting a significant increase in suspected nonfatal drug overdoses since June 2, according to data from the Overdose Detection Mapping Application System (ODMAP).
Given the rise in overdoses, the health department says it is urging residents to carry naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. According to the health department, this is particularly important for individuals with substance use disorders, as fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, has been found in various types of regulated drugs.
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department’s Harm Reduction Program offers naloxone kits to anyone in need. A brief 10-15 minute class is all it takes to equip individuals with this crucial tool. Naloxone kits are available during the following hours at the Dr. Rice C. Leach Community Room, located at 650 Newtown Pike:
- Mondays: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Wednesdays: 3 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
- Thursdays: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
In addition to carrying naloxone, the health department recommends the following steps to help reduce the risk of overdose:
- Avoid using drugs alone.
- If you or someone you know needs help with substance use disorder, visit Find Help Now Kentucky or call 1-833-859-4357 during business hours or 1-800-854-6813 after hours to explore available treatment options.
- Check in on friends, family members, neighbors, and others to share this vital information.
- Call 911 immediately if you suspect an overdose.
