Could SCOTUS ruling impact Hands On Originals case?

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Supreme Court’s decision to rule in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to bake a cake for a gay couple is getting praise from the Family Foundation.

“We recognize that it’s not a landmark decision, but it’s a step in the right direction for protecting religious freedom,” said Kent Ostrander with the Family Foundation.

Josh Mers with Lexington Fairness was disappointed in the ruling. He believes the Colorado Human Rights Commission’s mishandling of the case and hostility towards baker Jack Phillips did them in. However, he believes that won’t be a factor for the Hands On Original battle based on the way the Commonwealth of Kentucky has managed the case.

“They handled it very honorably. They did the investigation very appropriately and proper and I think they’re going to see that and don’t think it’s going to have the same effect on the case that’s before the Kentucky Supreme Court.”

The Family Foundation agrees that likely won’t be at play for the Kentucky Supreme Court, but there are still comparisons that build confidence for religious freedom advocates.

“Both employers employed or were open to employing LGBTQ people. Both sold their wares to LGBTQ people. It was just one specific slogan or one particular cake that they couldn’t do,” said Ostrander.
