UPDATE: Officials determine ignition source of UPS facility explosion

UPDATE (5/31/18): Investigators have determined the source of an explosion at a UPS facility in Lexington.

According to the Lexington Fire Department, investigators confirmed a propane torch is the ignition source of Wednesday’s explosion at the UPS building on Blue Sky Parkway.

On Wednesday, the fire department’s preliminary investigation a tank carrying acetylene exploded in a trailer that was parked inside the building. However, further investigation, according to Lexington fire, shows none of the acetylene tanks exploded.

They say the role of acetylene in the explosion is still unclear.

The Lexington Fire Department along with the Department of Transportation, OSHA, and representatives of UPS are still processing the scene.

According to the fire department, investigators are still unsure what caused the explosion.

Investigators will work from the area of least damage to most damage to identify and rule out possible causes of the explosion until there is only one possible cause left.


LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Two people were taken to the hospital with severe injuries Wednesday morning following an explosion at a UPS facility in Lexington.

The Lexington Fire Department says a tank carrying acetylene exploded in a trailer that was parked inside UPS Freight on Blue Sky Parkway just before 7:45 a.m.

The fire department says two people were taken to the hospital with severe, but non life-threatening, injuries.

Six other people were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Firefighters say the injuries include minor burns and concussions.

According to the fire department, there was significant damage to the building.
