Lexington implements Phase One of Heat Plan amid rising temperatures

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The city of Lexington will activate Phase One of its Heat Plan starting Saturday, July 13, as the heat index is forecast to reach 95 degrees or higher over the next four days.

Key Actions in Phase One:

  • Free Rides to Cooling Stations: LexTran will provide complimentary transportation to cooling stations for individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Water Distribution: Outreach teams will distribute water throughout the community to ensure residents stay hydrated.
  • Extended Hours at Community Centers: Lexington’s community centers, including Dunbar, Kenwick, Castlewood, and Tates Creek, will remain open into the early evening to serve as cooling stations.

The heat index, which combines temperature and humidity to approximate how hot it “feels” outside, is expected to be dangerously high. Lexington officials will continue to monitor the heat index and expand resources as needed.

Public Advisory:

The Division of Emergency Management urges all residents to take necessary precautions when outdoors, especially during late morning through the afternoon. Vulnerable groups, such as the very young, elderly, and those with medical conditions, should seek shelter from the extreme heat to prevent heat-related illnesses.
