New cases of whooping cough in Lexington
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The City of Lexington is currently facing a significant health alert as confirmed cases of whooping cough, or pertussis, have surpassed 40. The Fayette County Health Department reported on Tuesday that the city now has 43 confirmed cases, with five new cases identified in the last week.
The outbreak, which began on April 26, has raised concerns among health officials due to the highly contagious nature of pertussis. The respiratory illness spreads easily through coughing and sneezing, making it imperative for the community to take preventive measures.
Pertussis is known for its severe coughing fits, which can last for weeks and make breathing difficult, especially for infants and young children. Health officials urge anyone showing symptoms to seek medical attention immediately and to stay home to prevent further spread.
The Health Department continues to monitor the situation closely and is working to contain the outbreak. Residents are encouraged to ensure their vaccinations are up to date, practice good hygiene, and report any suspected cases to healthcare providers.
