Five former wildcats will represent UK Track and Field in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games
EUGENE, OR. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – The 2024 Track and Field Olympic trials took place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon from June 21st to June 30th. Five former wildcats earned themselves a top three finish in their events, and with that, punched their ticket to Paris.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (2017-2018) won gold in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 50.65 seconds; a new world record. It marks the fifth time in her career she has set the event world record and the second time she has won Olympic Trials gold in her career. This will be the third time that McLaughlin-Levrone will compete for Team USA at the Olympics.
Masai Russell (’23) finished first in the 100 meter hurdles, punching her first ever ticket to the Olympics. She came across the line in a world-leading 12.25 seconds. This time takes down the former Olympic Trials record (12.33).
Andrew Evans (’14) punched his ticket to Paris in the Discus. He won the Olympic trials with a throw of 66.61 meters. This will be Evans second Olympic games.
Daniel Roberts (’19) qualified in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing third overall with a time of 12.96 seconds. This is also Roberts second time making the Olympic team.
Alexis Holmes (’22) finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 49.78 seconds. This is her first time ever making the Olympic team.
Additionally, Charity Hufnagel (’24) won the high jump clearing a personal best 6’4.25”/1.94 meters. Even though she won the trials, Hufnagel did not meet the Olympic Standard. She was invited to compete at the Jamaican Championships earlier this week where she attempted to earn the standard but did not get it, so she will unfortunately not be competing in Paris.
