Bluegrass Army Depot changes commanders

RICHMOND, Ky. — The Blue Grass Army Depot in Richmond has officially changed commanders. Colonel Brett Ayvazian has handed over the reins to Colonel Samuel Morgan in a ceremony held on Thursday.

During the event at the Armed Forces Reserve Center on Battlefield Highway, Joint Munitions Command Commander Ronnie Anderson expressed confidence in the new leadership, stating, “We are 100% confident in Sam Morgan and his family. They are thrilled to be here.”

Colonel Ayvazian, who took command in 2022, highlighted significant achievements during his tenure, including the removal of chemical weapons. “During my time, they actually completed destroying the very last chemical weapon munition in the United States stockpile, and I was fortunate enough to be a part of that,” Ayvazian said.

Colonel Morgan emphasized his commitment to continuing the depot’s progress. “One of the things folks have asked me is, hey, tell us about your command leadership philosophy, tell us what your vision for the depot. Well, let me tell you about the vision. The vision is not changing; we’re going to continue to strive,” Morgan stated.

The transition comes as the depot looks towards the future, exploring new industries to occupy the space vacated by the chemical sites. Ayvazian mentioned potential projects, including a container manufacturing facility and a TNT production capability for energetics and compounds needed for conventional munitions.

As Colonel Ayvazian moves on from his role in Madison County, he will be taking on a new position within NATO, signaling a new chapter for both him and the depot.
