Berea College, Where Appalachia and Art Intermingle

BEREA, Ky. (WTVQ) – Today, we take a step into the world of Berea College. We spoke with several students and staff members first hand to learn more about the many departments and opportunities the college offers.

One of the most incredible missions of Berea College is the No-Tuition promise. A work-study program is assigned to every student that is accepted to Berea College. This program funds students’ tuition, therefore making it possible to graduate debt-free. The centers and galleries discussed below are common hosts of the work-study experience.

The first stop is The Loyal Jones Appalachian Center. It is a resource for all things Appalachia, including exhibits showcasing artifacts, images and people of the region. The center also has an extensive library containing Appalachian content, and is staffed by community members and students alike.

The next stop is the Log House Craft Gallery. It originally opened in 1917, making it the oldest craft gallery in the commonwealth. It boasts students’ crafts, as well as creations from artisans across the Appalachain Region. Some of the products include ceramics, woodcrafts, handmade brooms and woven goods. A must-see when you visit Berea!

Lastly, the student craft center is a space on campus where students can create their own masterpieces. Students learn traditional techniques and then create these products using the same methods as Appalachian artisans from decades ago. Their craftsmanship is phenomenal!

Berea is truly an artistic town, and Berea College mirrors that perfectly. However, the city has so much more to offer. A rich history partnered with beautiful landscapes and hiking trails compliment the creative offerings of Berea so well, hence, the well-rounded attraction of Berea.
