Background on Shane Ragland

Shane Ragland gained national attention due to his involvement in the murder of University of Kentucky football player Trent DiGiuro in 1994. Ragland was initially convicted of murder in 2002, with prosecutors arguing that he shot DiGiuro out of revenge for a fraternity-related incident. The conviction was later overturned due to issues with the testimony of a key witness, leading to a retrial. In 2007, Ragland accepted a plea deal for second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to time served, which amounted to five years in prison.

Ragland’s case was widely covered in the media, including a feature on Dateline, highlighting the complexity and twists of the legal proceedings.
