Suspect Arrested in Connection with Arson and Burglary After London Structure Fire

LONDON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with a reported structure fire on Laurel River Church Road in London.

According to Kentucky State Police, on Sunday, June 9, at approximately 8:47 a.m, emergency services responded to the scene following a report of flames engulfing a single-family dwelling. Campground Fire Department personnel discovered evidence suggesting that the residence had been burglarized and the fire deliberately set. KSP was alerted, prompting Trooper Steve Walker and Constable Robert Smith to initiate a comprehensive fire investigation.

According to KSP, preliminary findings indicate that the suspects forcibly gained entry into the residence, disabling the alarm system before allegedly taking valuables totaling more than $10,000. Subsequently, the dwelling was set on fire in an apparent attempt to cover up the burglary, say investigators.

In a collaborative effort, law enforcement officials, including Laurel County Sheriff Deputy Skylar McFarland, located the suspect, identified as Billy J. Swafford, 47, of London, near his residence. Swafford was taken into custody and now faces charges of Arson 1st Degree, Burglary 2nd Degree, and Possession of Burglar Tools.

This is an ongoing investigation. We will continue to update this story as we learn new details.
