Seven new cases of whooping cough, says Health Department

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department says seven new cases of whooping cough have been diagnosed in the county in the past week.

Lexington is currently grappling with a pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak, a highly contagious respiratory illness transmitted through coughing and sneezing, according to the health department.  Pertussis vaccination is a crucial component of routine immunization for school-age children, with a booster recommended for those aged 11 and above.

With the seven new cases, Fayette County has now recorded a total of 21 confirmed pertussis cases since April 26. This concerning uptick underscores the importance of vigilance among central Kentucky caregivers.

According to the Fayette County Health Department, it’s imperative for caregivers to look for signs and symptoms of pertussis in their children and ensure they are up to date on their vaccinations. Given that the vaccine’s immunity tends to wane over time, the booster shot is particularly crucial for older children and adults.

The health department says to not hesitate to consult your healthcare provider to determine if you or your children require a new dose of the pertussis vaccine.
