Capital Avenue Bridge in downtown Frankfort inspected following fire

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Frankfort bridge damaged by fire is still structurally sound, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The cabinet says a bridge inspector was called to the scene of a fire Wednesday night underneath the Capital Avenue Bridge, which carries US 60 over the Kentucky River in Frankfort.

Franklin County Emergency Management closed the bridge to vehicles and pedestrians around 9 p.m. until the fire could be put out and the bridge checked for damage.

The cabinet says an engineer inspected the structure and noted some charring and peeling of paint, but determined that the structural integrity of the bridge was not compromised.

The bridge was reopened to traffic shortly after 10 p.m.

An inspection team is expected to be back out at the bridge on Thursday to document any deficiencies to the structure, according to the cabinet.

Police say the fire was started at a homeless camp under the bridge. They are still investigating.

The Capital Avenue Bridge was built in 1938 and carries an average of 11,180 vehicles per day.
