Mike Smith becomes second oldest jockey to ever win KY Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WTVQ) – On a day like Saturday at Churchill Downs, a trainer wants an experienced jockey aboard their horse.

For Justify, not only did they have the most experienced jockey in the field in Mike Smith, but they had the second oldest jockey to ever win the derby.

This was Smith’s second time in the winner’s circle for the derby.

In 2005, he won aboard Giacomo.

Even with the experience and riding the favorite, Smith still had concerns going into the race.
