‘The fight is not over’: Blue Grass Station expansion

BOURBON CO., Ky. (WTVQ) — Director of Blue Grass Station Steve Collins announced the airfield project’s closing, saying in a statement that it is “a punishment for patriotism.”

Todd Cohoon, a veteran suffering from ALS after serving his country, is now on a ventilator in his Kentucky home. His wife Kim takes care of him.

They happen to live in Bourbon County, where the Blue Grass Station Airfield expansion would affect Todd’s final time here on earth.

“You know my husband gave his life to protect the people who live here and everywhere in the U.S., and for him to say that is was punishment on him and his people, we’re the ones who are being threatened,” Kim Cohoon said.

Other landowners in the area are still very concerned about House Bill 6 and the funding that could allow for the expansion to continue as planned.

Collins made the argument that this expansion is our duty to national security. Farm owner Rebeccas Rigney says there are other places they can protect national security.

“I am so grateful for the military; I am so grateful. We have many locations that they can protect our national security, but we only have so much farmland,” Rigney said.

Rigney says she appreciates Governor Andy Beshear’s support for their community, saying she’s glad their voices are finally being heard. She adds while this decision was a step in the right direction, she is urging people to call 800-372-7181 and state their opposition to house bill 6.
