UK HealthCare 1st in Kentucky to offer incisionless uterine fibroid treatment

Fibroids are very common in women of a child-bearing age, and can range in size from a grape to a grapefruit.  Some of the symptoms include heavy periods.

Lexington, Ky (WTVQ): UK Healthcare is the first in the state to offer innovative sonata treatment for women suffering from debilitating symptoms caused by uterine fibroids, common growths of the uterus. Fibroids are very common in women of a child-bearing age, and can range in size from a grape to a grapefruit.  Some of the symptoms include heavy periods.

Mark Hoffman, Director for the Uterine Fibroid Treatment Program. says this Sonata Treatment is a much less invasive option for patients suffering from uterine fibroids and, “allows them to get back to their daily lives almost immediately is great for our patients.”

Hoffman says fibroids are the most common pelvic tumor in women with nearly three out of four women in the U.S. will have uterine fibroids before the age of 50. Most surgical approaches in Kentucky involve major surgery, something that takes weeks of recovery, “whether through a large abdominal incision or a laparoscopic incision like a hysterectomy removing the uterus entirely, or a myomectomy which is a surgery to remove fibroids,” he said.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 200,000 women each year are treated for uterine fibroids. This treatment now gives women an option to treat fibroids inside the uterus, so there are no incisions or scars.

Hoffman says this new treatment allows patients to return to work in days not weeks.

“that involves no hospitalization, same day discharge. minimal pain afterwards, return to work is almost instant, no down time really no real restrictions.  The data in terms of safety is fantastic, the data in terms of outcomes, improved symptoms is fantastic,” he said.

Hoffman says the system is now implemented and patients are scheduled to get the procedure this month. Here is the link if you are interested in this treatment.
