Teacher rallies continue in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The roads were lined with dozens of Fayette County teachers and supporters before a board meeting Monday demanding more than just honks from those driving by.

“We think everybody should know just how awesome our public schools are because we need to protect them. We feel like they are very much under attack right now by our state government and our governor,” says Jeni Bolander, a special education teacher at Henry Clay High School.

This rally, like many in recent weeks, was motivated by anger towards a new pension bill and a recent spending bill the governor will veto.

He’s kind of put us between a rock and a hard place.

Blander wasn’t a fan of the recent state spending bill, but isn’t too encouraged by what could take it’s place.

“What do we do now? Are we going to be satisfied and try to push for two bills that weren’t great to start with? Are we going to try to fight for something better and possibly end up with something worse?”

Teachers are planning to continue their protests in Frankfort on Friday when lawmakers will be back in session. Many school districts are expected to cancel school on Friday because of it.
