UPDATE: Driver killed after chase, RV fire indentified
London, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police say an Ohio man died trying to get away from officers Wednesday morning in Rockcastle County.
State Police say two Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers were stationed at the entrance of the I75 southbound on-ramp at Exit 76 in Berea at around 12:45 a.m.
The road was closed due to construction work going on in Rockcastle County.
According to police, both officers spotted a motorhome coming toward them on US Highway 21.
They say the driver, identified at 67-year-old John McCoy of Chesapeake, Ohio, intentionally ran through barriers and construction barrels and got onto I75. He continued into a construction zone, where construction crews were working. Those workers were told to leave the area immediately.
Officers set up a roadblock to try and stop McCoy but they say he intentionally hit a police vehicle and continued traveling southbound towards the KY Highway 1505 overpass, which was blocked with heavy construction equipment.
McCoy struck two sky lifts head-on and his motorhome immediately burst into flames, according to police.
They say officers tried to get McCoy out of the burning motorhome but were quickly overpowered by the flames.
McCoy was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rockcastle County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday.
No officers or construction workers were injured during the incident.
