Federal Grant Money Awarded To Airports In Frankfort, Flemingsburg And Marion

The grants, awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will be used to build a hangar, purchase property near a runway and cover costs of a wildlife study.

The grants will pay for a large percentage of project costs, but the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Aviation (KDA) will cover portions of all three projects.

The grants awarded include:

·         Fleming-Mason Airport, Flemingsburg – $518,576 for property acquisition for a portion of the Runway Protection Zone, control of which is required by the FAA for safety reasons. The estimated cost for the project is $576,196. While the federal grant is expected to pay 90 percent, the KDA will provide 7.5 percent of the cost – an estimated $43,215 – and the Fleming-Mason Airport Board will provide 2.5 percent – $14,405.

·         Marion-Crittenden County Airport, Marion – $499,959 toward construction of a 10-unit hangar. Estimated total cost of the project is $555,510. The federal grant is expected to pay 90 percent of the cost with the KDA providing 7.5 percent – about $41,000 – and the airport providing 2.5 percent – an estimated $13,800.

·         Capital City Airport, Frankfort – $100,000 to conduct a wildlife hazard assessment. It involves identifying wildlife species around the airport and assessing their numbers, locations, local movement, and daily/seasonal activities. The year-long study will include recommendations for mitigation for identified wildlife threats.  Estimated total cost of the project is $105,334. The KDA will pay the balance.
