Fayette County Public Schools preparing buses for new school year
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – School in Fayette County starts on August 16th and mechanics are working around the clock to ensure school buses are ready.
ABC 36 was told inspections happen all year round and even when school is out.
“It’s all for the safety and protection of the children,” said Paul Mckenzie, a mechanic and 25 year veteran with Fayette County Public Schools.
Fayette County has more than 280 buses in its fleet and the majority undergo repairs at the Liberty Road Bus Garage.
“Safety has come a long way on these buses since I started,” said McKenzie. “The industry has stepped itself up tremendously.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration –more children are taking buses to school.
A recent study by the National Safety Council shows it’s safer for students to ride on buses, rather than in the family vehicle or walking.
However, students could be at risk as they get on and get off the bus.
As a new school year begins, the Fayette County Public Schools Transportation Director, Marcus Dobbs is encouraging drivers to have more patience and to allow more time for travel.
