Summer block party encourages children to go outside
DANVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Hundreds of people in Danville took advantage of Sunday’s nice weather at the fourth annual Back to School Summer Block Party. With school right around the corner, kids were eager to enjoy what is left of their summer.
Dancing, drawing and reading were among just a few things that kids were able to do at the party. Though it seemed like all fun and games, behind the celebration was a message that organizers hoped to spread.
The event was intended to show children that there is more to life than what is on their phone screens.
“We’re all so wrapped up in social media, like Twitter and Instagram, that we get sidetracked about interacting with one another, one-on-one,” said volunteer Tiara Brand.
Complex Collaboration Step Team of Louisville was part of the entertainment. Their founder and coach, Vernell Porter, is happy that his team can help expose kids to different art forms before they jump into a new school year.
“It gives them the ability to express themselves, and just give them expression before school,” said Porter.
Several people in the community said they believe the best part of block parties, such as this one, is that they bring people together and encourage them to talk to people they’ve never met before.
Organizer Rashea Ford says the conversations sparked by today’s event are ones that are needed to keep the community going.
“Starting a conversation is what changes people. It’s what changes things in the community. It’s what makes things better,” said Ford.
