The US Army established Camp Nelson 159 years ago April 26, 1863
JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The National Park Service is commemorating the US Army’s establishment of Camp Nelson on Saturday, April 30.

According to Camp Nelson National Monument, the public is invited to explore the pastoral landscape of Central Kentucky on a ranged guided tour of the grounds starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The program will highlight the site’s development during the spring and summer of 1863 during the Civil War.

Organizers say the moderate hike will be conducted over unpaved trails and includes inclines and steeper sections. Participants should wear hiking boots and bring water. Leashed dogs are permitted on the program. In case of inclement weather, please bring an umbrella and rain jacket.

The program begins in front of the park visitor center and is expected to last about an hour and a half. For more information, click HERE.
