Suspect in Transylvania University machete attack to appear in court
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- The suspect involved in a machete attack on the campus of Transylvania University Friday will appear in court Monday afternoon.
Police say 19-year-old Mitchell Adkins from Cincinnati walked into Jazzman’s Cafe in the admissions building just before nine with a machete and several other knives.
A witness says Adkins said, “The day or reckoning has come”. That same witness says Adkins asked someone about their political affiliation. When that person answered “republican”, Adkins said, “You are safe,” but apparently, two women were not safe. Police say Adkins stabbed them.
Soon, campus public safety officers responded to an alarm students set off, and took Adkins into custody. Mayor Jim Gray, who says he came to campus to be with students praised the officers’ efficiency.
The stabbing put the whole Gratz Park neighborhood on alert Friday. Two other schools, Sayre and Saints Peter and Paul were also both on lock down.
Adkins has been charged with assault and wanton endangerment.
